4 Types of Coffee Brewing Methods Explained

Whether it’s hot or cold coffee, you probably have a go-to coffee brewing method you return to every day, but have you had the chance to explore different brewing methods? From Pour Over to French Press here’s everything you need to know about the different brewing methods and how to prepare them.

The Importance of Brewing Coffee Correctly

If you know a thing or two about specialty coffee, you know that not only the origin and roast type, but the brewing method can also affect the quality of your coffee. Not all brewing methods are created equal. Some require finer coffee grounds, while others require them to be coarse. Some take 4 minutes to brew, while others may take 24 hours! This guide will help you find the best brewing method for you and teach you how to prepare it.

The Different Types of Coffee Brewing Methods

1. Pour Over

Pour over, also known as drip coffee or V60 coffee, is made by slowly pouring hot water over coarse grounds. This method is best used to highlight the flavor of single-origin coffee.

How to Prepare Pour Over

For best results, use 22 grams of coffee grounds for every 350 grams of water. Add a paper filter to a dripper that sits above a beaker or a pot. Add your coffee grounds into the filter. Begin pouring hot water slowly over the coffee, starting at the outside and moving toward the center in a circular motion. Stop pouring once the grounds are barely wet. You will need to do these steps 3 more times with breaks in between to allow the water to soak the coffee grounds and drip through.

2. French Press

The French press method offers a full-bodied experience that’s slightly stronger than pour over coffee.

How to Prepare French Press

With the French press method, coffee grounds are fully immersed in water and strained through a metal filter, allowing oils and all the flavor to be released into your morning cup of coffee.

3. Siphon

Interested in an artistic, tea-like cup of coffee? While it may look like a lab experiment, the Siphon brewing method is just a fancy way of making coffee.

How to Prepare Siphon

To make coffee using a Siphon, add water to the bottom bulb. Allow the flame to heat the water to a boil before it moves to the hopper. Once hot, add coffee grounds, stir, and remove the Siphon from above the heat. The change in pressure will push the coffee down the filter, resulting in a flavorful cup of coffee.

4. Cold Brew

A relatively new member of the coffee scene, cold brew is made by steeping coffee grounds in room-temperature water overnight. It offers a smooth, pleasurable coffee experience with every refreshing sip.

How to Prepare Cold Brew

To prepare cold brew coffee, place ½ a cup of freshly ground coffee beans in a jar. Pour 2 cups of water over the grounds to saturate them and gently stir with a wooden spoon. Cover the jar and let the coffee grounds steep on the counter or in the fridge for 12-24 hours. Once done, pour the coffee through a mesh strainer and enjoy.

Thanks to these extremely humid Mediterranean summers, we constantly find ourselves reaching for a cold refreshing beverage. More often than not, it is an iced coffee to keep us alert for the day’s lengthy to-do list. In the family of iced coffees is the trending cold brew beverage which is packed with caffeine and delicious flavor.

What is Cold Brew Coffee?

Not to be confused with iced coffee, cold Brew coffee is a coffee beverage that’s brewed with cold rather than hot water. It is made by steeping ground coffee in cold or room temperature water for 12 – 24 hours. While it usually depends on the origin of coffee beans used, cold brew coffee often tastes stronger than your typical hot brewed coffee. Despite its name and method of preparation, cold brew coffee can also be enjoyed hot, simply by heating it instead of adding ice.

Benefits of Cold Brew Coffee

Before we get into how to make the perfect cold brew coffee and potentially change your views on brewing your own coffee at home, let’s discuss its benefits.

  • It may boost your metabolism as hot coffee does
  • It can enhance your mood
  • Thanks to its caffeine and magnesium properties, it may reduce your risk of heart disease
  • As it’s slightly less acidic than hot coffee, it may not irritate your stomach as much and is less likely to result in acid reflux
  • It is easy to make from the comfort of your own home and can be ready when you’re in a rush
  • It improves focus and boosts alertness
  • It is rich in antioxidants that can help reduce your risk of health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis.

How to Make the Perfect Cold Brew Coffee

Now that you’re familiar with many of the benefits of cold brew coffee, we imagine you are currently rummaging through your cupboards for some ground coffee beans. Let’s make some cold brew!

Equipment:

Here is what you will need to make cold brew coffee at home:

  • A coffee grinder (if you are using whole beans)
  • A jar
  • A mesh strainer
  • A wooden spoon

Ingredients:

For 2 cups of cold brew coffee, you will need:

  • ½ a cup of freshly ground coffee beans
  • 2 cups of filtered cold or room temperature water
  • Ice (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Place your freshly ground coffee beans in a jar
  2. Pour the water over the grounds to saturate them all
  3. Stir the mixture with the spoon to make sure all the grounds are wet
  4. Cover the jar and let the coffee grounds steep on the counter or in the fridge for 12-24 hours. The longer you brew it, the stronger it gets.
  5. Pour the coffee through a strainer and discard the ground coffee
  6. To serve, pour over ice.
  7. If you prefer it less strong, dilute it with cold water or a milk of your choice

Tips for Making the Best Cold Brew Coffee

  • The typical ratio for cold brew is 1:4 beans to water but you are welcome to amend the recipe as per your preferences
  • The longer you brew the coffee, the stronger it becomes
  • If you’ve accidentally added too much coffee grounds or made it too strong, it can easily be diluted by steeping in in more cold water or adding milk or creamer to your cup
  • If you don’t want to consume caffeine, you can swap the beans for decaf and it tastes just as good!
  • Make it even more flavorful by adding a pump or two of your favorite flavored syrup to the cup

Types of Coffee Beans

Many of you are already aware that coffee, in its most basic definition is a brewed caffeinated beverage made using the grounds of roasted seeds of a coffee plant, AKA coffee beans. What many casual coffee consumers overlook is the fact that there are two very distinct coffee categories: Arabica and Robusta.

Arabica

Arabica, the most popular category of coffee bean is usually more expensive as it is of much higher quality than Robusta.

Robusta

Robusta beans, on the other hand, are cheaper since they are easier to grow and are in abundance. Their ease of sourcing and slightly bitter taste are what make them more fit for instant coffee and non-specialty coffee blends.

Types of Hot Coffee

Espresso

Have you ever noticed a strong taste from a shot of espresso? That’s because coffee beans are finely ground and brewed in a higher grounds-to-water ratio that results in a bolder and richer flavor. Espresso shots are the base of many espresso-based beverages such as lattes, cappuccinos, mochas, and more.

Americano

Long night? The Americano is the perfect pick-me-up. It’s a double-shot espresso diluted in hot water.

Decaf

If you love the taste of coffee but don’t necessarily need that added kick of caffeine, decaf is the way to go. Decaf coffee is brewed using decaffeinated beans that are repeatedly steamed and then rinsed in chemical solvents that strip them of about 97% of their caffeine content.

Latte

A latte is made up of 1/3 parts espresso and 2/3 parts steamed milk for that extra warm milky goodness. Depending on how creative your barista is, your latte might be topped with a fancy latte art made out of steamed milk foam. Lattes are often sweetened with syrup flavors like vanilla, caramel, and hazelnut to name a few.

Cappuccino

Similar to a latte, a cappuccino’s top froth layer is slightly thicker. The typical ratio for a cappuccino is equal parts espresso, foam, and steamed milk.

Flat White

A flat white, similar to a latte is made up of steamed milk and espresso, but with a higher ratio of espresso to milk.

Mocha

As the name suggests, a mocha is a chocolaty coffee. It’s basically a latte made with cocoa powder or chocolate syrup.

Cortado

Cortados originate from Spain and are made up of equal parts espresso and steamed milk.

Iced Americano
